TIMELESS

Primitive dun kiger mustang mare and foal

There was a time, when my Kiger, Padre, was still on this Earth, when I did primitive dun horse art almost exclusively. Then, and still now, their ethereal earthy beauty just takes my breath away. It actually does feel like a timeless infatuation, like a spiritual memory I have always had.

I feel that stirring again, that need, a craving to see and explore the subtleties of the gentle shadings of the dun coats. The silvery grey of the grulla and the many shades of the tan duns. I have missed it. Maybe enough time has gone by with Padre gone that it is a void that has to be filled.

His mane was magical in it's beauty. The days I could bury my face in it when the scent of many fireplaces was in the air, the scent of pinion pine especially, and then look again, at all the shades within his lush mane. Underneath, a silver. Then a layer of rich black brown. And then the top layer, a toast tan. It is a very sweet memory. He was the exactly the color of peanut butter, all over. I know this because when I was painting dun Kigers, I proved it to myself by going out back and holding my jar of Jiff, up to him. That's funny.

He was magnificent to me, he had great big bones, and when he walked towards me, he moved so methodically, rather like a draft breed. I miss those big legs a lot. He made us laugh when all the horses were doing what horses do, bucking and being silly. Because he would move his head and neck like he was really participating with great gusto... while leaving all four lazy hooves on the ground.

Here's to you, big boy.
